I'm surprised by how few of the numbers under 10 are taken. Also 4 multiples of 11 (including 11) are taken. Maldanado took 13 which hasn't been assigned in I don't even know how long. Only three multiples of 5 which tend to be common numbers are taken. 2, 4, 9, and 10 are all available. I'm was curious which number is reserved for Vettel on the off chance he doesn't win the title (#5).

The World Champion has first choice to #1. If someone else is world champ next year, Vettel might have to pick a different number.

I think this is stupid of F1 to do this. the numbers made sense as far as teams standings from the previous seasons. Its not like a jersey number as if you win you change to number 1 next year.

Vettel picked #5. Because he's reigning champ he has the privileged of using #1. Only the reigning champ can use #1. While he's using 1 his other number is reserved hence nobody else could choose #5 this year.

Sorry but you won't sell me any F1 merchandise when the driver's number becomes obsolete in 12 months.

I guess that is their point. However, if I could remember correctly the number system has been around for quite some time and they have no issue selling merchandise (not counting the US as we don't have a huge F1 market)

Pfft, there's always one who wants to be #99...

Sure they sell stuff but they might sell more now that drivers are able to build an identity with a number. Without names attached to alerts the driver car number meant almost nothing to me all year. Other than knowing who drove car #1 and #2 I couldn't tell you what car number any driver had last year and that's sad.

I agree and that could be the main motivation of the number changes. It always comes down to $$.

The argument is that most driver's that are eyeing that number 1 spot (the ones with the most fans coincidentally) will have number changes every other year granted that Vettel stops winning.

If she ever dumps him, Sky F1 will lose about 30 minutes of broadcast time each race. They cut to her every 20 mins or so.

And I am totally okay with that.

It's down to one of us to Photoshop a Cadbury's Flake onto his 2014 helmet.

Chilton hasn't decided yet, so maybe #69 will appear yet

3 Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull-Renault

Vettel is now RBR's #1 and #2 driver. I can't help but think that this was a Horner-sent message to the new guy.
